Surrender To Spiritual Awakening Using EFT

by Wal on November 28, 2014

David Godman SurrenderIn The Mountain Path, Vol.18, No.1, 1981, David Godman writes the following about spiritual awakening and surrender.

One of Ramana Maharshi’s most frequent comments was that there were only two reliable methods for attaining Self-Realization; one could either pursue self-enquiry or one could surrender.

An almost equally common statement was that jnana and bhakti are ultimately the same. This second statement is usually interpreted to mean that whichever of the two paths one chooses to follow, the ultimate goal and the culminating experience will be the same.

It is generally assumed that the two paths do not converge until the moment of realisation is reached. However if Ramana Maharshi’s teachings are correctly interpreted, then it will be seen that the paths of surrender and Self-enquiry merge before Realisation, and that in the higher levels of practice, if one follows the path of surrender, then one’s sadhana will be the same as that of someone who has chosen the path of Self-enquiry.

Surrender

As is stated in the article EFT And The Path Of Devotion, The Path Of Devotion includes surrender. It means surrendering the illusion, and it is all illusion. Surrendering your story, your life as a baby born on that day so many years ago and growing up having all those experiences whether perceived as good or bad, and then becoming an adult and having all those adult experiences. It all has to go, your story has to go. All those beliefs about politics, about religion, about family, about friends, about money, about work, and so on, they all have to go, they are all illusion. All those desires, for money, for sugar, for alcoholic beverages, for those other things humans are addicted to, for power, for approval, for self-importance, and so on, they all have to be surrendered, they are all illusion. They are not real. The only true desire is the desire to fully be who you truly are. The good news is that EFT can assist with all of this.

In surrendering you are surrendering the ego-mind. The beauty of using EFT as a technique for surrendering is that it can be used as an enlightened method. Some methods of surrender promote destruction of the ego-mind whereas with EFT, the ego-mind can merge with Love, which most find to be a more pleasant concept. Let the mind fall in love with the heart.

Some Thoughts On Surrender

Surrender identifying with thoughts. What is a belief? It’s just a strongly held thought. Our stories are just a collection of thoughts. The moment we stop identifying with thoughts. they no longer have power over us. This is the basis of self-enquiry, discovering that we are not our thoughts. With devotion we open to loving everything. There is nothing that isn’t “God” or The Source Of All That Is. Loving everything, even the thoughts, the illusion, everything, and in falling in love with the Heart, deeper and deeper, we discover that we are that infinite love, the Supreme Reality.

EFT For Surrendering Desires

An aspect of moving along The Path Of Devotion is the surrendering of desires. To let go of desires is to dis-identify with the body (the false self). The True Self is everything.

In the next example I will use the desire for money. If you wish to work with any other desire simply replace the word ‘money’ with whatever it is you desire.

First get quiet and then say to yourself, “As I hear the words ‘I desire money’, how true does it feel out of ten?” When you have the number then do EFT on the desire. Repeat until the number is at zero. Check again on subsequent days because desires are often not one, but many. You may have many desires for money (and the other desired-things) that your system has lumped under the one heading and so you may need many sessions in order to make sure that they are all weeded out. Your system may need hours or days in order to identify these desires.

EFT Setup – Desire For Money

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire money’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I desire money, I deeply and completely accept myself.
The reminder phrase is – I desire money

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire money, I open into openness.

EFT Setup – Desire For Sugar And Sweet Things

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire sugar and sweet things’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I desire sugar and sweet things, I deeply and completely accept myself.
The reminder phrase is – I desire sugar and sweet things

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire sugar and sweet things, I open into openness.

EFT Setup – Desire For Alcoholic Beverages

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire sugar and sweet things’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I desire alcoholic beverages, I deeply and completely accept myself.
The reminder phrase is – I desire alcoholic beverages

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire alcoholic beverages, I open into openness.

EFT Setup – Desire For Power

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire power’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I desire power, I deeply and completely accept myself.
The reminder phrase is – I desire power

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire power, I open into openness.

EFT Setup – Desire To Feel Important

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire to feel important’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I desire to feel important, I deeply and completely accept myself.
The reminder phrase is – I desire to feel important

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire to feel important, I open into openness.

EFT Setup – The Desire To Think

This is really the big one.

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I desire to think’, how true does it feel out of ten? You may find that ten is not enough. Maybe do it out of 100 or 1000.
Even though I desire to think, I deeply and completely accept myself.

The reminder phrase is – I desire to think

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I desire to think, I open into openness.

Other Desires

The above list is by no means exhaustive, there are so many desires that people have. It may take considerable effort to identify them all because they are so closely associated with the illusion of who we believe ourselves to be. One that many have is a desire to defend the ego when such defense is not really needed. For instance, a family member might say something that you interpret as critical of you and you feel the need to defend yourself. But they are family and are likely criticizing you due to their desire to help you in some way, or they may not, in their minds, criticizing but, instead, merely desiring attention or desiring recognition or desiring love and so forth. So you can use EFT to tap away your desire to defend the ego, that might include desire to be accepted, and desire to be liked, and desire for approval, and desire to please others, and desire for appreciation, and so on.

Identifying Desires

Desires often hide themselves cleverly and can be very difficult to identify. We often fool ourselves into thinking we don’t have a desire for something when, in fact, we do. One way to bring desires out into the open is to ask yourself, “If I knew I only had one hour to live, what would I do during that hour?” Surrender that. Once that is surrendered, ask the question again and then surrender that, and so on. Some people will read this and get defensive or go into denial. Surrender that.

Surrendering Hatred

Another aspect of moving along The Path Of Devotion is the surrendering of hatred. Interestingly, when I point this out to people, they nearly always say that they don’t hate anyone or anything. But if I dig deeper, I nearly always find some level of hatred for someone or something, even if it is below the level of consciousness. So be careful here, be ruthlessly honest with yourself in order to root out any remaining hatred.

For instance, President George H. W. Bush is famous for saying that he doesn’t like broccoli. So let us give an example using broccoli.

Ask – As I hear the words ‘I hate broccoli’, how true does it feel out of ten?
Even though I hate broccoli, I deeply and completely accept myself.

The reminder phrase is – I hate broccoli

Celestial Tapping Techniques setup:-
Even though I hate broccoli, I open into openness.

Identifying Hatred

Start with the usual suspects e.g. race, religion, politics, phone companies, bad weather, noise pollution, and so on, and then move on to things you hear about in the news that you don’t like. With practice you might find lots of things to tap on.

Surrendering Attachments

Another aspect of moving along The Path Of Devotion is the surrendering of attachments. Most people find surrendering their attachments and beliefs particularly difficult to do. It is one thing to let go of the unpleasant experiences in life but another thing to let go of the most valued experiences and things and beliefs and people in your personal history. For instance, letting go of that accident you had when you were ten years old might be easy but letting go of feeling special in some way, or letting go of doing good deeds in order to feel good about yourself, might be considerably more difficult. But it is necessary to remain identified with your True Self and anything that keeps drawing you back into the illusion of your personal story has to go.

Here are some attachments you can try surrendering. As I explained elsewhere in this article, the word ‘God’ is a concept that everyone puts their own meaning to. I use the word ‘God’ for convenience. Some people will use ‘God’ and some will substitute ‘God’ with ‘I-AM’, or ‘The Divine’ or ‘The Higher Than Divine’ or ”The Source’ or The True Self’ or ‘The Inner Guru’ or ‘The Source Of All Life’ or ‘The Source Of Love’ and there are other possibilities but I recommend that you choose wisely.

  • Even though I am not fully open and accepting what is in every experience, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am not surrendering the DO-ing to God in every experience, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am not fully surrendering to God in every experience, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I stop myself from surrendering to God, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am holding onto the mind, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am holding onto the past, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am holding onto the future, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I am holding onto my personal story, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I live in the future, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I live in the past, I deeply and completely accept myself
  • Even though I can’t accept what is happening to me I choose to accept what is

Surrendering Beliefs

Another aspect of moving along The Path Of Devotion is the surrendering of beliefs. Beliefs are usually very strongly held and there are none so strongly held as religious beliefs. But if they get in the way of identifying with the Truth of who you are then they have to go.

For example, David Godman tells the story of a Roman Catholic Priest, a Benedictine Monk by the name of Father Henri le Saux. It seems that Father Henri had a partial awakening in the Presence of Arunachala Ramana. For the next twenty five years, Father Henri tried to fit his experience under the umbrella of the Holy Trinity. Then he had a heart attack and nearly died. As he was recovering he had what he called a remarkable spiritual experience, a realization that Christ is I-Am and that I-Am is also his own True Nature. He subsequently surrendered his Christian beliefs and concepts to God. Father Henri wrote, “So long as we have not accepted the loss of all concepts, all myths – of Christ, of the Church – nothing can be done”.

Note that in John 8:58 Jesus says, “before Abraham was, I-Am.” In the original Biblical Greek this I-Am is written in the format of a name, meaning that I-Am is the name of God. Also consider that the name ‘Jehovah’ is an English mistranslation of the name ‘Yahweh’ which means ‘He That Is‘. See also Exodus 3:14 “And God said unto Moses, I-AM THAT I-AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I-AM hath sent me unto you.”

Try this:

Even though I don’t know who I truly am, Who Am I?
The reminder phrases are “I don’t know who I truly am”. “Who Am I?”

Which, of course, is self-enquiry, but it identifies concepts to be surrendered. Knowing is of the mind and of the past. I am is now, this moment, being here and now, right this moment.

Surrendering False Identity

These examples above are only a fraction of what you have available for surrender. The challenge is to identify what can be surrendered. It is often what we believe ourselves to be, an intimate part of our personal story. Sometimes your True Self will make it very obvious by making it seem like there is something that you must keep, or you must do, or you can’t let go of. That is a clue, but it is often difficult to realize that these things are to be surrendered and you can find yourself indulging in those things instead of surrendering them. For instance, perhaps you love shopping and you suddenly find the urge to shop as often as possible, more than ever, enjoying every moment. A happy shopper is a part of who you have always considered yourself to be. But you are not that, it is an illusion, and that identification with shopper and the desire to shop is a distraction.

Surrender Everything That Can Be Surrendered And Then Surrender The Surrenderer.

Surrender everything that can be surrendered and then surrender the surrenderer. This next setup may need many repetitions before surrendering everything is complete:-

Even though I haven’t surrendered everything, I open into openness.

And then, when the above setup is complete, surrender the surrenderer:-

Even though I have surrendered everything, I open into openness.

Thank you for all the work put into this web site. A few days ago, while meditating, the phrase “Spiritual EFT” came to mind. I have used EFT for decades on everything, and have recommended it to everyone. And, while I have used it dealing with spiritual issues, it never occurred to me before to Google the phrase “Spiritual EFT.” I came to this site and read enough to want Words of Power in order to do The Grand Program for Transformation, which I did a few days ago. I have just created a document containing the exercises, setups and suggestions for performing Spiritual EFT on myself. I have been a “follower” of Ramana, Papaji, and Gangaji for years, so this site is very appealing on many levels. Thank you, again, for this information, which will be so much help on my path into Oneness. I look forward to links to the above articles

Thanks, David, for buying the book.

By “Spiritual EFT” my intent is to assist people in three ways.

Firstly, the book “Words of Power, Resonance for the Golden Age” contains information that, when tapped into the tapping points, elevates the consciousness to extraordinary levels in a short time. While most spiritual teachers and gurus are still working at the lower spiritual levels, this spiritual EFT will take you to the highest spiritual levels and beyond that to Divine levels, and even beyond that.

Secondly, Spiritual EFT can move you towards spiritual awakening. Jan, my wife, awakened spontaneously, but she experienced considerable hardship in the process. Nearly everyone who has awakened has done so after receiving the spark of awakening from an awakened guru. For instance, Arunachala Ramana awakened spontaneously and he awakened Papaji who then awakened Gangaji. But, spontaneous awakening is often accompanied by considerable hardship as evidenced by Byron Katie and Eckhart Tolle and others. And so the spiritual awakening series in this website is aimed at helping people to awaken without so much hardship.

Thirdly, the spiritual awakening series is aimed at assisting those who have awakened to move towards full self realization. Very few have awakened and remained in an awakened state in their day to day lives from that moment on. Most people progress to this over years, decades or lifetimes. For instance, Eckhart Tolle’s story of how it took him years to fully establish himself.

The first of the three ways (above) is fully working now, the second two are works in progress. By keeping an eye on this link http://www.eftsa.com/tag/spiritual-awakening/ you may get more ideas about awakening with spiritual EFT from time to time.

If I were just beginning to use EFT for spiritual awakening I would be tapping the prayer into each of the EFT tapping points daily. The prayer is at this link http://www.eftsa.com/spiritual-awakening/prayer/

Wal, thank you very much for your suggestions and the links. Would you be open to questions I may have as I progress with Spiritual EFT and the prayer. And, if so, would I comment in this thread or some other way? Thanks, again, for your service with EFT, and particularly with Spiritual EFT.
